August 15 th.
We decided to come to Mackinac Island a day early because of gale-force winds forcasted for today.
It is like walking back in time here. Everything has been kept pretty well as it was in the early 1900's. There are no motorized vehicles aloud on the Island, just horse drawn carriages.
The homes are beautiful, watching the ferries come and go is fascinating.
We went on a buggy tour yesterday for two hours and learned a lot of history about the island.
The Grand Hotel is huge and beautiful. The veranda is the largest in the world ( it costs $12.00 per person to walk on it) Of course you must dress for dinner, suits, ties for men and a dress for women. Needless to say we didn't have dinner there. We did enjoy the tour and the beautiful gardens.
There are 17 fudge shops here (I have resisted so far).
Bicycles are the most popular mode of transportation on the island.
